What do you think of when you see this picture? I see a kitten begging for something, but anyones guess is as good as mine as for what it is begging for. I like to think that it is begging to learn something new. Have you ever heard the saying "You learn something new everyday." Even if you don't realize it at the time that you have learned something new. When we are in school we strive to stuff as much information in our brains as possible so we can graduate and not have to learn anymore, but what we don't understand is that you never stop learning new things. Even if it is something as simple as washing clothes for the first time or how to tie your shoes. As humans we need to want to learn in order to learn. If we are just stuffing it in because we have to then we will forget what we "learned" as soon as what we needed to remember it for is done. example. rememering an equation for a math test. There is a difference between learning and remembering for a short time. As a high school student myself I have experience in the not learning, but only remembering.
Sometimes we get our notes one day and the teacher expects us to know everything for the test the next day. I am sorry to tell you, but i can not learn something over night. No matter how hard I try I can not learn that fast. We can hear something and not even realize it untill later when I find myself thinkng about it, but I won't remember what I had for lunch. We go to school for a whole day, but by the time we get home most of us (people) we will not be able to remember what we supposedly learned that day. Most people can tell you most of the words to a song twice, but can't tell you what they had for dinner the night before. I am sure that we do learn something everyday, but we have to stop and ask ourselves do we really learn all the things that we are supposed to everyday?

I totally understand, two days from now we won't even remember what we just took a test on. How is that going to help me in the future? Thanks school, for pressing so much on us all at once. Just try to relate to the topic that you are learning or picture it in your head. That's what I do. Hope it helps
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will have to try that.
DeleteAriel....your concerns are totally valid about not really being able to learn anything in depth. I read several education reformers who say the same thing. They blame the country's love of high-stakes tests -- legislatures think teachers aren't teaching, so they want to "make sure" the "bad teachers" are gotten out of the school system. So they test, test, test the students, freak the teachers out, and no one can function.
ReplyDeleteI just hope that you are able to learn a little more in English this semester that can help you in your other classes, as well as when you go to college.
But I'm sad that you feel so stressed. Let me know how I can help.
